Cities To Fall In Love With This Valentines Day

Cities To Fall In Love With This Valentines Day

Although many argue there are 365 days each year in which we should be showing our love for one another; sometimes it’s nice to push the boat out in honour of a special occasion. If you’re looking for a romantic escape with that certain special someone in February, we have a few unique suggestions for you. Alternatively, if you’re a footloose and fancy-free singleton looking to get away from all that ‘roses are red’ malarkey we’ve got a few alternative suggestions for you, too. Paris, Rome and Venice might be the classic V-Day favourites, but why not think outside the box, and choose a different path…

1. Barcelona

From cobblestone alleyways hiding romantic tapas bars and quirky shops, to a white sandy beach with lively bars and a spacious promenade, vibrant Barcelona has plenty to offer couples and singles alike. Whether you want to spend your days strolling hand-in-hand, admiring the Modernist architecture and the shadowy creations of the Gothic Quarter, or indulge in the world-class cocktails showcased by atmospheric bars and restaurants, this European city that never sleeps will keep you entertained all round the clock. Expect crisp blue skies and an average temperature of 14°C at this time of year.

2. Helsinki

Beneath the fairytale blanket of snow, the Finnish capital of Helsinki is a year-round destination that thrums with life; even during the winter months. Rent skates at the ice park, plan a winter’s hike on one of the charming offshore islands or try your hand at some cross-country skiing before heading to a traditional Finnish sauna to relax, unwind and reward your efforts. Dine on delicious pancakes known as blinis, fresh fish and sumptuous chocolate, all washed down with a warming glass of spiced glög. Just make sure you bring appropriate clothing; the average temperature from December to February is around -4°C.

3. Bruges

Although we can’t guarantee you’ll find Bruges under a dusting of snow in February, there is a slim chance. However, even a little rain can’t dim the charms of this beautiful city, so often overlooked in favour of Prague or Amsterdam. This Belgian beauty offers visitors the archetypal fairytale town, complete with cobbled streets, twisting spires and dreamy canals. In fact, it is the best-preserved medieval town in Europe, according to Skyscanner. How much more romantic can this city get? The epicurean traveller will find food heaven in Bruges with its range of 16 Michelin-starred restaurants and delicious gourmet chocolate (this is Belgium, after all!) whilst culture vultures will thrive on the city’s contemporary art scene. Bruges is also a famous hub for jewellers – a goldsmith in this city invented the process for diamond cutting. So, if you’re thinking of putting a ring on it, perhaps Bruges is the place to be.

4. Marrakech

For those craving a dose of winter sun, head to exotic Marrakech and enter a world far removed from the dull daily grind. Explore the bright colours and spicy scents that permeate the air around the glittering souks; marvel at the Saadian Tombs and the faded glamour of the Badii Palace; then hole up in one of the many cafés around the main square of Jemaa el-Fnaa, sipping a mint tea whilst you watch the food stalls set up for the night. A stay in a romantic riad will be the cherry on the Moroccan cake. Choose one with a rooftop terrace so you can clink glasses under the stars.

5. New Orleans

Those with an adventurous spirit are very likely to fall under the spell of New Orleans. A visit to the Big Easy on the banks of the Mississippi is typified by round-the-clock nightlife; incredible musicians and spicy cuisine that pulls together influences from the French, African and American cultures that make up the New Orleans community. Time your visit right and you might experience the famous Mardi Gras, which falls in February or March each year. Whether you go with a loved one or not, you’re bound to find someone to dance the night away with at this raucous celebration.
